SWMBO has a Laptop:-
It's pretty ancient - 2007 - but entirely adequate for what she wants. A few days ago 'It was dropped'. Of course no-one is admitting responsibility. Today it was flat as the proverbial pancake because it had landed on the PSU Plug and broken the Socket off, so plugging the Lead in wasn't doing anything.
In all honesty I couldn't care less about it, but ......
However, it came from PCWorld and they're always advertising about how good they are so why not?
There's quite a big one in Burton so I nipped down with it, marched in and located an 'Expert'. Things went down-hill from there on.
'Ah, well, we don't repair them here any more, it's Data Protection' - Cobblers.
'We send them away to be fixed and that's (non-returnable) £50 - Oh yes!
'When they've looked at it they'll let you know the Cost' - over my dead body.
We parted company at that stage and I brought it home. It wasn't difficult to locate a Video about how to take a similar Model to bits - essentially lots of Screws, Flat Cables and a bit of bravery with the Clips round the edges. The PSU Socket wasn't even on the PCB, it's clipped into a Moulded Bracket which had broken. A dose of Superglue and a squeeze put it back, and reassembly was reasonably straightforward. It took me two goes to get the Touchpad Ribbon Cable into its Socket properly, and I have got a small Screw and a bit of Tape left over. I know where the Screw went but I wasn't brave enough to push down on it any harder.
So, if anybody wants their Tosh Laptop taking to bits for £50 I'm yer man
