Since the change from horsepower to horseless carriages has there been any really fundamental change in powered road transport? Of course there have been huge changes in comfort and reliability between a red flag veteran and a Tesla but they are still a four* wheeled chassis with seats and an engine.
Possibly the most interesting and varied area of personal mobility is in lightweight vehicles. All have been made possible by the same lithium battery technology that powers everything from phones to drills to cars. From relatively conventional electric bikes to electric scooters and unicycles. Leaving aside questions of safety and legality, it's quite impressive to see somebody on an electric scooter whizzing up moderate hills at over 20mph.
