The lens is of the monolith type and was I'm told expensive to make. The reason why the 902 was replaced with the direct viewing model 902A was because of a number of factors. The expensive lens, also the restricted viewing angle and strange sensation for some people of looking down a mine or elevator shaft. The electronics in the 902 are almost identical to the HMV 900.
The KT44 line output valve continued to be used in later EMI TV sets such as the 1948 models 1805 and 1806, models which continued to have mains derived EHT when other TV manufactures were adopting flyback EHT.
