I agree that FB isn't the best medium for vintage tech communities, but it has become a de-facto standard in some niches. Some years ago, the most active engine-collectors' forum closed when its owner died and there was a mixup with the hosting and the whole database got wiped. Although there were other suitable forums, the community was already in social contact through FB and the tech chat moved there instead of another forum.
Having accepted the limitations of FB and its commercial nature, I don't mind it too much. There is a synergy with the MEET concept in being closely in touch with communities that are not already into the vintage tech scene. People will casually browse their way to new content without needing to have a pre-existing motivation strong enough to register specially, or having the correct buzzwords to search for. I don't know if this will help in practice but the principl appeals.
