The UL84 AFAIK has a higher slope than its EL84 cousin so is more prone to instability, there could be reasons the G2 is run at near or at full HT potential, the Philips set I have with a UL84 the G2 Is actually 11v higher than its anode! It's my set I use virtually every day on Radio 2, never missed a beat in 10 years.
