Soak in paraffin/white sprit/diesel for  a week or so, the pitch will dissolve.

I melted out the transformer and currently have it in some white spirt. Unfortunately I don't have enough to do the job but will sort that out tomorrow.

PS I'd forgotten what a filthy job melting pitch was. Luckily WD-40 cleans tar off of your hands quite effectively.
