When you click to view an image, it should open in a new tab. That behaviour hasn't changed as far as I'm aware, but it could be browser-specific (it always helps to mention which browser and OS you are using when reporting something like this). You mention Alt-Tab, which sounds like it might be opening in a new window rather than a new tab, but as I say, for me, it's a new tab, exactly as before. I've tested it in Firefox and Chrome, on a W10 machine.
As to dragging an image into the box, yes, I can see why you might expect the images to sit in that box - that would be intuitive.
But instead, they appear beneath the box, and if you drop multiple images into the box, you get a list of them.
That's actually all you need to do. But next to each image is a couple of buttons ("Remove", and "Insert Into Post"). Obviously "Remove" is going to do what it says on the tin, but the "Insert Into Post" is completely optional.
If you just drag and drop your image(s) and do nothing else, they will appear beneath your post. That's what happened to your woodworm picture.
But if you click "Insert Into Post", then the image will appear wherever your text cursor was at the time. That's what happened with your first picture showing the completed set.
If you look at the "source" of your post*, you'll see that "[attachment=21176]" is at the top of your text. When you clicked "Insert Into Post", the software put that there. You can manually move that to wherever you'd like it in the post (handy if you're telling a story and want pictures to appear in line with the text), or simply delete it. If you were to delete it, then the picture will appear below your post, along with the woodworm image.
Actually, none of that has changed either - it's always worked that way...
Literally, the only thing that has changed is the addition of the drag-and-drop box. And if you'd rather not do a drag-and-drop, you can just click on that box, and it will open up the standard dialogue box to let you browse to the chosen file, just like before.

*: You can do that by quoting it in a reply, and clicking the "View Source" button above the edit box. That's the button that looks like a text document, at the far right of the toolbar, next to the "Maximise" button with 4 green things. Hover your mouse cursor over the buttons to identify them. Alternatively, if you do a "Quick Edit" within the edit window, you'll be editing the BBCode "source".
