The BBC cannot be blamed when the headline in the Sun today was "90% garages dry". I must clarify that I didn't buy the Sun: I just saw it on a rack in my local shop, this morning, next to some newspapers. The headline on the Express also made me smile, but I will not quote it here.
I drove from Cornwall to the Midlands on Saturday and was fortunate in being able to fill up at my regular garage on Friday evening. On Saturday afternoon the third garage which I tried had fuel, but were limiting sales to £20 per customer. This just gave me sufficient fuel to return to Cornwall. I am due to drive to Middlesbrough tomorrow, 450 miles and managed to get £30 of diesel this morning at my regular garage, after queuing for half an hour. All the other local filling stations are dry. I need to get about another £30 worth to fill the tank, tonight, to enable me to get to 'boro. I am not going to set off without a full tank but will not worry about getting back until after I have arrived!
