Depending on what the job is, you can vary the concentration and temperature with citric acid; what's good for some really hefty piece of metal won't be optimum for a delicate radio part.
As above, it does have the advantage over oxalic of not being toxic, and you can buy it on the High Street; my local Wilko's always has it.
I've been trying to convince myself as to whether or not brushing citric solution on to really thick heavy rust (possibly on something not easily immersed), and leaving it overnight "softens" the rust up and makes it easier to remove by a wire brush on a power tool? Hard to say whether this is real or the "placebo effect"
