Hi was a Mechanic / Mot Tester till i retired in 2019 by then i hated the job 40 years ago all cars were rot boxes & unreliable but you could fix them with out a laptop and praying it would read the fault code . Checking cars for MOT years ago had it down falls poor welding repairs bodge and Fiberglass repairs covered in underseal failed one car on a large amount of welding that was needed & wrote on the failure ( VT30 ) not to underseal car before retest the customer complained to the Ministry ( what there were called then ) and i got a warning about wording not undersealing before retest as it is the customers right to do that to his car . Moving on 40 years later not many vehicles are rot boxes now apart form Ford Transit Nissan Micra K11 Fiat Punto MK1 to name a few . Performance & economy now would have been a dream 40 years ago .Today people dont like spending money on cars & when they go wrong due to lack servicing and when it fails on warning lamps now you get out of people you did not F fail that last year . DVSA as they are called now move the goal posts too much . Now you got to do a online exam every year and its timed its a money making for private firms doing training as now the refresher courses have been abolished due to GOVT cutbacks . Glad i got out of the motor trade i could write a book as thick as a telephone directory kind regards Bob
