Hi Craig.
Diesels get a legendary reputation for reliability from the old designs, the non turbo sloggers from Peugeot, Mercedes, BMW etc.
Fast forward to the naughties and this has flipped the other way. Positive crankcase ventilation, exhaust gas recirculation has caused massive amounts of carbon to build up in the inlet tract, valves etc, BMW make an engine with the timing chain at the rear of the engine that can fail from as much 20,000 miles requiring the removal of the engine. Hyundai's Diesels have issues with the copper seals wearing under the injectors causing combustion gasses to degrade the oil and carbon then blocks the oil pick up pipe either wreaking the engine or a minimum an engine out job to remove injectors, recut the seats and fit new seals a two grand job. There are other diesel issues with VW, PSA etc. Modern diesels and petrol seem to be made that its not to be repaired, or have a long trouble free life. Manufacturers walk away from out of warranty claims and I now see many quite young cars in breakers due to both mechanical and electronic failure, not rust.
