I don't know about the best method, but if you're going to use a sellotape type of tape again, then use what's often called "Magic Tape". It dries out much less than ordinary sellotape, doesn't go yellow and is less nasty to whatever it's on. While it's not recommended for document preservation, it's not a bad substitute for archive quality sticky tape.
