Thanks Andy; it's miserable; raining and dark here so all is normal; I've just been doing more French polishing more by feel than sight.
Thanks for the staining information Fido. End grain is always a problem and as you say is greedy for stain. My problem with staining was contrasting veneers; I've got a steady hand but not steady enough to run stain on a cloth up to a knife edge joint as in the stringing. I wanted to avoid adding any stain whatsoever to the light coloured veneer on the stringing as it would really stand out.
Sanding with abrasive paper can also transfer dark dust onto light coloured veneers making them look dirty. Adding the stringing really did cause me many problems but was worth it in the end.
A friend uses spray cans of toner and I'm sure these would have also worked once the grain was fully sealed and everything suitably masked.
I don't have all the answers and am always willing to learn from others with more experience than me; if there is a sure fire way of adding stain up to abutting light coloured veneer then I would very much appreciate being informed because this part of the restoration caused me so many headaches.
