Turning the set on its end to see if anything underneath is getting hot I was surprised to get really good reception of many stations because the aerial coils were now horizontal rather than vertical.
Sam is there any metalwork in your bench that could be reflecting the signal?
I had a 501 model similar to this model which suffered the "what I believe to be" normal shrinking bezel.
It took me a while to get it to fit again filing the holes for the remaining pegs to fit in and copious amounts of Araldite.
It was a lovely looking radio in its chestnut cabinet but it was always a bit deaf though.
