Thanks for posting about this set - some interesting observations there.
These Cossors are one of my favourite looking sets - I've got three of them myself (494/501)
As for the aerial coils orientation, as I'm sure you know putting a ferrite rod inside the coil would de-tune it, so you'd have to rewind it or start from scratch with new coils plus it probably wouldn't work very well on the SW range.
A good save though !
