There's a fair bit of weird underground distribution stuff around...
Apart from the Royal Mail mini trains, the London Hydraulic Power Company is a REALLY interesting one.
They delivered water under pressure to buildings to power lifts etc. Most interesting, as a utility company, they had rights to dig up streets & pavements etc...
When they went out of business, one of the cable providers (Mercury, part of Cable and Wireless), cleverly bought up the assets as it gave them a pre-existing huge network of underground pipes suitable for fibre, with existing entries to most buildings in the City & West End.
In the mid-2000s when I was running chunks of hedge funds in the West End, I used C&W to provide diverse entry routing of fibre to harden the resilience of our comms infrastructure.
