The ion pump works in the projections of Mr. Alek. It is turned on for many hours along with the power to the picture tube / cathode. I assume that then it is quite effective in eliminating the residual gas. The ion pump allows you to obtain a very deep vacuum, greater than what was achieved in the heyday of CRT. The cathode ray tube balloon is not placed in a typical 300-400 degree chamber, but is somewhat heated, perhaps by a blower.
