My contact with citric acid is because the Great Grandparents, mums side, were amongst other things, scrap metal dealers, (yeah I know, Irish heritage to be sure, other side Scots and some Hebrew too), they used to buy it by the 112lb bag. Scrap copper is valuable as long as its clean, so you cut up your scrap and throw it into a vessel full of a saturated solution of citric acid, hey presto a few hours later, clean copper. Particularly good on lime in plumbing copper.
Its also good as we found, for cleaning the heat exchanger in a gas boiler.
Oh and yes, as Nick says, excellent to cut your golden brown with.
