Nice save with ordinary household chemicals. I buy clear vinegar in 5 litre cans (is that the right term when it's plastic?) for about £3. I keep some in spray bottles and use it for cleaning all sorts of things. From loos to work surfaces. The water here is so hard it will stand up without the glass, so limescale control is a constant battle. But I still don't want a water softener.
I note you rinsed thoroughly. One nice thng about vinegar (and hydrochloric acid) is that it washes away very easily. HCl, in the 5% to 10% range is readily available too, sold by DIY sheds and builders' merchants for cleaning cement marks off brick etc. Very handy for heavier descaling jobs.
