This is indeed the worry if these capacitors are ignored and I have to say that I've come across a few so called restored sets have these capacitors still in circuit.
Finding a similar modern capacitor in looks will be hard. One thing I always say is not to hide safety components especially if you are doing a job for a third party or may sell the set as a working example later on.
In the unlikely situation of someone getting a belt and it goes further its best that these caps are seen rather than hidden in an old component shell.
