Last year I was teaching a navigation course for my local Ramblers, and wanted to use images from the Mountain Training "Hillwalking" handbook. They have a copyright notice in the book. So I phoned them, and they said absolutely no problem - send us a tenner and we'll send you a CD of all the images in the book to use in your course.
Now of course this is a current publication, and is the bible for navigating and walk leadership in hill and moorland terrain. But would I pay that for an article from the 1950's and 1960's? Absolutely not.
