Not really - carbon-comp resistors are readily available. They are primarily used where surge currents are encountered - the obvious place being the 100 ohms or thereabouts that you find in capacitor dropper power supplies, and for inrush limiting in small switched-mode supplies. They look just like the old ones:

The price is a bit of a shock. The RS parts are over 20p each. 0.25W 1% metal film parts are usually under 2p each. Presumably because the compo resistors are now made in realtively small quantities.
