If it's fitted to a Jaguar it's ten times more likely to explode, break, catch fire or get catapulted out instantly the ignition is turned. Tell the owner to fit it to a Mercedes and it will work.
It sounds like a short on the radio supply either part of the casework managed to earth to a trace carrying 12v during installation or I agree with the long screw theory. I think it can only be something like that. Would be great to find out. Which part of the country is the Jag in? Maybe a local member can be put in touch if you can't travel?
