At these low EHT voltages you can get away with bare diodes. At higher voltages the EHT will track across the surface long before you get to the diode's own maximum voltage rating. Then you have to pot them though I've got away with tight fitting sleeving.
If you're running the set off a UPS, I'm wondering if the stray capacitance that allows you to draw an arc with a screwdriver is so low that you don't get much of an arc.
