Like fluorescents, LEDs are a mixed bunch when it comes to colour rendering. The worst fluorescents are horrible, as are the worst LEDs. The best of both are pretty good though ultiamtely not quite as good as daylight. Then there's the personal preference of warmer or cooler white. I normally use warm white LEDs. That's 2700K to 3000K. This corresponds to the sort of colour you get from conventional filament lamps. 2700K for old fashioned tungsten, 3000K for halogen. Others may prefer a cooler white. 4000K is common.
As I've said before in this thread, the quickest and chepaest way to get your bench lamp back working is some LED tape. You can get this is warm or cool white. I use it for under cupboard lights in the kitchen where it works well. Mostly runs on 12V, some sets are provided witha driver, otherwise just use any 12VDC PSU that's to hand.
