I've had an experience with my old Philips 100 portable record player from 1978. I have this equipment since I was seven years old and it worked quite well even its motor and pieces are very weak. ( I found out that the stardart speed induction is a little bit over the 33 and 45 rpm because with the record weight it'll slow down). The electric motor axis transfer the rotation to a pulley and this pulley to the platter.
This pulley is kept touching the axis due to an spiral that by age started to get loose. I found it very similar to a stapler spring (The one that push forward the staples), I've made some cuts to reduce the spiral and substituted the original one for this spring. It worked very well, in the beginning a bit hard but by the time it adjusted itself.
