At least the battery compartment looks reasonably intact which is a blessing, given the outward pressure exerted by the battery contact springs.
Would I be right in assuming that it is a hard plastic, thus ruling out the use of solvent adhesives?
Rather than your metal mesh/fibreglass idea, would a sheet of plastic across the joins, secured with a suitable adhesive be better? (I'm assuming, from your picture, that most of the damage is on flat parts of the housing.)
I wonder if a piece of self adhesive tape on the outside would help to get the pieces perfectly aligned while you patch the inside?
