What a good idea Trevor to have a second hard disk with a fresh install and one to 'play' with. Thanks for the offer of a spare. You have reminded me that I must have a disk from another Dell that was BER.
It turns out that the Broadcom wireless LAN card fitted to my machine is described as being 'problematic' on more than one of the Linux sites. Some of them even contradict each other as to what drivers to load.
