Hi,
Lovely job David and a nice write up.I've been privileged to see work in progress as you kindly sent me pictures of the respray and it is looking splendid.
I bought one of these delightful sets about three years ago and was surprised to get it cheaply through eBay; it is still on my list of sets to restore but it looks in good cosmetic condition.
You made a very good point about being able to obtain spray cans of lacquer in any colour; many auto paint suppliers can make up such a spray can and have hundreds of colour swatches to choose from or the colour can be be made up from the BS or RAL code if you have it.
Please see;

Having a spray can made up isn't cheap at around £10 for 400ml but it will give you the colour required and it is worth bearing in mind that the colour coat doesn't need to be thick as long as it covers because cheaper clear lacquer can then be applied care being taken not to flat through to the base.
Thanks for sharing David and I'll echo Rob in saying more pictures please.
Kind regards, Col.
