Well got to the bottom of this set eventually,
apart from having to change some caps and tidy up (along with sleeving some wires that were short) here is what was wrong with the set following extensive work (I do mean extensive)!
Output Tx short
UR1 rectifier U/S
FC13 frequency changer U/S
and a PEN26 output valve U/S
the final problem of sensitivity was found to be the c38 trimmer (aerial IF filter), when taken out of circuit the set came alive!
so here are some pics of a before and after.
