All moving pictures are sampled in the time domain. We don't usually call that digital. Analogue video is sampled in the vertical dimension. We call it lines. Digital video is also sampled in the horizontal dimension. Finally it's quantised.Some of the theory of 2 dimensional sampling of images was first worked out by Mertz and Gray in a famous paper published in the Bell System Technical Journal in 1934. Nyquist was probably responsble for the rest of the theory of sampling and quantising.
