I think I've got some hex or round bar with deep tapped holes in the ends (possibly threaded all the way through the centre). Don't think I can get screws into the ends as the chassis is too close and I wouldn't want to start drilling unless truly essential. I might be able to get a bit of studding into the holes and put nuts on them.

Then I can attach something to the hex bar for the buttons to bear on.
