The UHF only ones often didn't look soldered, the most common problem was that both soldered ends were effectively dry joints, the dry joints used to cause oscillator drift amongst other things if the internal rotor earthing springs were a bit iffy, plus it made manual tuning difficult because of the mechanical play caused by the poor soldering.
