I've been reading "Voices Across the Sea" by Arthur C Clarke. First published in 1958 with a 2nd edition in 1974 which adds material about satellite communications. It's well worth reading for a clear introduction to the subject, easily accessible to lay readers. Clarke after all was a very good writer.
On p138 he wrote: "The essential step came in 1907 with de Forest's invention of the triode............The triode ushered in the electronic age.........."
I'm inclined to agree with Clarke. The Fleming diode wasn't quite electronics, the triode definitely was.
