As you say, car batteries are designed to simply deliver large currents for engine starting, not to provide a continuous, if lower, demand.
What you want is a 'Leisure' battery as used in caravans, etc. Perhaps this is what you call a service battery?
Ask yourself why anyone would have a second hand car battery for sale? Almost certainly because it could no longer do its job and had to be replaced by a new one!
