I was wondering today if I could get away with using a car battery to power my water pumps and possibly lights on the boat. The textbook answer is no. The car batteries simply deliver large currents for engine start. The fact is though I can pick up a second hand car battery for a tenner. Or less. A service battery will be hovering around 60 quid. I figure with some decent charge provision, water pumps are covered. DC lamps are another matter.
By the way it is going very well. The water pump I repaired is working. The water tank is mounted on deck with a feeder pipe and hose into the boat. The tap is vintage electrics with a rotary breaker and spray nozzle. Being old I had to sand it to clean up the plastic. So, now I have running water to the sink. Next job is shower and then a wheelhouse. I made a stand for the water pump so it's open to access and often I use bitumen on timber around the floor.
