When in my teens I tried etching PCBs in nitric acid. Dilute rather than concentrated. I think I acquired it at school from a friendly lab tech. To my delight it was much quicker and cleaner than ferric chloride. Until the day I used some that was too strong. The resultant brown fumes were not pleasant.
