Interesting - I wouldn't mind betting that the horrible noises were caused by a lack of decoupling. If you add the capacitor(s), try experimenting with Rs (2 lots of 3.3 ohms sounds like a lot to me). But, almost unbelievably, I've never played with the humble LM386, so I base my prediction on other amplifier circuits - I stand to learn as much as you here 
I had the same problem with my bench amp, although it didn't look quite right on the bedside cabinet, so I'm pleased I've got a Hacker there instead now. Beware, BTW, because there is something very addictive about DIY audio!
