Strangely enough, I thought that was all valve testers were supposed to do! 
The characteristic curves mean very little to me. As for slide rules, I could never use one anyway and the morning after decimalistation my quality of life soared, as I was able to use a pocket calculator instead of an aluminium abacus to do my daily radio accounts aboard the passenger liner Windsor Castle! in which vessel, I had the honour to be 2nd radio officer at the time.
