No, it does seem unusual. Anyway, I have opened it up and probing around the two transformers, they both appear to be OK. Plenty of high and low AC volts. There is one of those horrible wax capacitors oozing wax, and looking very suspect. Generally, it appears to be extremely well built and robust, and in excellent condition. I am wondering if the filament rheostat has gone, but I can always get LT from an external supply. I can't find any high voltage DC in it, or see any sign of rectifiers, but I have only looked briefly.
