Trevor, i've been looking back through some notes from 2013 and this is a known problem with the sound on a very few Auroras made before May 2010. We had the problem with one of the units at the Vintage Wireless Museum.
It's a tolerancing issue on the sound modulator chips and was fixed by a couple of resistor value changes. R33 and R49 need to be changed from 220R to 2K2.
