Fear not young David, all is not lost. It's still potentially 'On the Bench'.
The problem was that I simply couldn't get the 'Volume Control' to work properly. It comprises a ganged Split Stator Reaction Capacitor and a Pot which varies the Grid Bias on the rf Stage. The Pye Servicing information says if there's a problem send it back - yes, well. Access is almost impossible. I bought a couple of possible replacement Reaction Capacitors in the fond hope of bodging one in but it proved to be impractical. However, I managed to find a complete 'Front end' Box on eBay and I'm hoping to do a swap.
