I'd googled 'pre-amp circuits' and hadn't come up with much, and most pre-amps on offer seem to be for hi-fi set-ups, so the little K1803 Velleman kit looks an excellent little jobby, and at £3.90 from ESR for the kit, is keenly priced. I try to use ESR whenever I can - their P&P is modest at £2.50, and their prices are way cheaper than Maplin for example. I could nip to the local Maplin and get a K1803 kit if I was daft enough to shell out £7.99 for what ESR charge £3.90:

As to the Voltage, yes, I think a PP3 should suffice.

I'll most likely order a kit from ESR and compare it with the 386 module I've used.

Drifting off topic somewhat, Velleman kits in general offer excellent value for money - I've built several K7000 signal injector/tracers for chums.

On a neat little  PCB with two controls for the amplifier & injector sections. Just needs a little speaker, a box and a switch and it's good to go:
