O.K. I now know how to clean up a pinch roller. I used scouring sponge pad with a bit of soapy liquid, followed by cotton buds. The roller looks as new now. The eject mechanism works if I just rotate the white cogs in the right direction. I have a problem now with the spring that ought to pull the cassette head back. Either the spring is now too weak or I need much more grease between metallic surfaces. For now I tried de-greasing before I choose a suitable grease and maybe fit a much stronger tensile spring.
While all this was going on I was playing a Beatles tape in my Satellite car cassette player and heard a funny noise. Lo and behold, it had chewed up the tape. That brought back memories of teen years, pulling in spools of your favourite tape in shock and horror. Mine did survive on this occasion without the dreaded twist. I looked inside the Satellite and for sure it needs servicing. Heads, tray and rollers full of grime and worn - so another project.
I will keep at it. Somehow I'm now obliged to do a good deed and get the Pye Player back to former glory.
