With modern laptops the battery technology is central to their design - there is no harm whatsoever in leaving them on charge - the battery packs themselves have an embedded processor and sensors and the chargers know exactly when to back off and exactly what charging profile is needed when the pack says it needs more Coulombs...

All very clever stuff.
