Based on my experience of Defrag and various MS operating systems . . .
If you've started to run defrag and it says it will take hours and hours and hours, you MUST let it take all the time it requires - without any power interruptions or any other form of interruption. The reason why it is saying that it will take so long is simply because it has been a very long time since defrag was last run. I usually run defrag about 3 times a week. The fact that your HDD hasn't been defragged for simply ages is a major contributor to the lack of speed in that PC.
You have no alternative but to run defrag and let it take as long as it wants. Period.
