If the defrag said that it was going to take a day, then your disk is in a bad way -not mechanically, but the file structure is in a very poor state and desperately needs defragging.
Do the defrag - let it run overnight. Nothing to lose and potentially a lot to gain - a badly fragmented disk will cripple performance on any system.
