There is nothing in the way of manuals for Variacs. They are just a big mains rated variable transformer.
You just need to know the rating so that you can fit the correct fuses or circuit breakers.
As far as brushes go you would do better looking for a unicorn feather.
It took me several gos to get a brush right on an NOS Indian manufactured one back in 2012.
It had been dropped and the brush was broken.
You will need to measure up the old one and get the closest size you can but make sure it is slightly bigger as you then have to file it to fit. I had to shape it to fit in the little clamp and bent the braid over to give the clamp a better grip and electrical contact.
I bought the brushes by size and not by manufacturer in a bag of 10 for a couple of quid.
