4,000 ohm and 6,000 ohm is confusing, do you mean uf/mfd?
You need to check if it's the PA that's the source of the crackling, normally this can be proved by disconnecting the audio input, if it still crackles then the PA would be suspect, the PA has some preset pots on the board, I wouldn't fiddle with them at the moment although they can sometimes cause crackling, lets see if it's the PA or preamp first.
