Hi,
Thanks Lawrence. Unfortunately due to our TV being riddled with sport I resorted to downloading movies and music videos. These movies are selected by our viewing taste and we never take any notice of critics who really should get a job because many modern movies being so highly praised by critics are to us pure rubbish. Real films coming up on the TV are rare and generally twice as long as they need to be because of the adverts; Bron and I can watch our movies without interruption; we can pause whilst we make a pot of tea or meal. A couple of weeks ago Bron and I visited the HMV store in Meadowhall in the hope of buying a couple of modern movies but were informed these movies are not yet available on DVD. I've now placed an order for both these movies via the web and I think the DVD's are to be released on the 24th of this month.
Thanks Lawrence for repeating your speed test results; Colin kindly did a search and found that our location would give a huge drop in broadband speeds if we switched to BT from our current NTL (Virgin media).
I'm very interested in this new Wi-Fi technology insomuch as to the benefits it opens up; at the moment I can use my computer to download or stream lots of material from the web If I've got it right; if this Wi-Fi works as I think it does we can by-pass the computer completely and also do away with the need to store material to disc simply watching web content directly on our TV? This should open up a vast wealth of free entertainment which is quite legal; two things already I look forward to are having a go at connecting to CMT (Country music Television) and YouTube.
When NTL cable was installed here over twenty years ago our then bundle included CMT which we never tired of but then CMT was moved to another bundle costing more money as was another favourite TLC (The learning channel). It's possible CMT is no longer available but what fun we will have finding out what is available to suit us. Possibly I might be expecting too much but given the rubbish our TV already receives I'm sure it won't be hard to improve upon; for many years Saturday TV is sport TV and weekend viewing in general is so poor that we don't look forward to anything hence our free downloaded material to use instead.
Many thanks Paul; I've already contacted Virgin Media by email and await their reply; hopefully as you say we might receive a Wi-Fi Virgin Media router FOC? Technology has moved on a great deal in the last ten years whilst we've been using our old style TV and DVD player; reading through the new TV/DVD manuals is like visiting a whole new world; this whole new world only needs connecting and this is what this thread is really about?
After two days of gale force wind today is much calmer but overcast so I can do some useful work restoring the Lorch; with luck I can use the spray gun to apply paint to the carriage then I can do a bit more re-assembly but I'll update the lathe thread on this. I will of course update as soon as I receive a reply from Virgin Media.
Kind regards, Col.
